The road in this Iowa Highway Commission photograph is not identified (it could be Lincoln Way). The Model T Ford on the right was probably made around 1916. The horse-drawn wagon in the left of the photograph also recalls a time when both motor and animal-drawn vehicles shared the roads. The new Highway Commission took many photographs of cars on muddy roads to demonstrate the need for paving.

H. E. Briley Groceries delivery truck in about 1916. Briley's store was located at 247 North Sheldon (apartment building there now (1991)). Deliveries following spring rains were slow in the days before paved roads. Photo somewhere in Campustown.
