This advertisement for the Ames Hotel ran in the 1912 Iowa State College student directory. The Ames Hotel was on the northwest corner of Main Street and Duff Avenue. The hotel had earlier been the Davis House. In very early days, the New York house stood on the same site.

Briley's market and bakery was located on the west side of what is now the north end of Sheldon Avenue. This ad appeared in 1912 when the street was known as Pike Street.

C. B. Nelson started his business in 1908. This advertisement ran in the Iowa State College directory in 1912. The third generation of the Nelson family, now (1996) operates Nelson Electric Co. at 116 Clark Avenue
