The 49th old soldiers reunion of Story County was held in Nevada (Iowa) on August 18, 1927. This group, shown in front of the Nevada Public Library, represents nearly all of the Civil War veterans remaining in the county. Standing, l-r: Eli B. Cramblit, Ames; Cyrus Highland, Slater; H. O. Ridgeway; George Barnard; Oley Nelson, Slater; Fred C. Tilden (Farwell Brown's great uncle) Ames; T. J. Miller, Ames; Elias W. Shearer, Collins; Parley Sheldon (many-term mayor of Ames); and Charles Hamilton (the last surviving Civil War veteran in the county when he died in 1941), Ames.
