The composition room in back of the Ames newspaper, the "Intelligencer," in 1892. On the left is Julia Esther Lanning, the society editor. Next to her is Thomas Lamont Gossard, who began his newspaper career at a pay level of $2.00 a week. Julia and Thomas married in 1909. Thomas Gossard eventually became the head of the news department for "The Intelligencer," before it became "The Ames Tribune."
